Long Dash is now
"Publish Yourself!"
We have merged with Vox Pop, the bookstore, coffee shop and media company based in Brooklyn, with its bigger, newer facilities and larger staff. James and Tim will still be involved, but we'll be working with Michael, Sander, Gabriel, and others, too. We're confident the move is going to allow us to improve our unique combination of fast, cost-efficient and author-friendly publishing.

Long Dash Publishing
You drop off your manuscript on a disk (or e-mail it to us or send us a disk), and we print it ourselves, on site and give you back a book – a trade paperback with a cover of your own design. Long Dash Publishing uses new technology to help anyone get a book in print faster and less expensively than ever before. Turnaround time is usually 2-4 weeks, but in cases where single books need to be printed we can usually complete a book while you wait. On a few occasions, for uncomplicated jobs, we've made books for people within 48 hours.
We work with a number of experienced, previously published authors, but we love to work with first-time authors. We're writers and editors, too (that's why we started this business) and we like to think of ourselves as the most author-friendly self-publishing service on the planet. Click at left to check out some of the books we've helped publish recently and are on sale on our Web site.
Prices begin at $195 for the first 10 copies of your book (more for 8.5x11-inch books or books longer than 250 pages) and go down after that: $145 for the next 10 copies, and $105 for every 10 copies thereafter. Costs go up if you want full-color covers, glossy or linen-finish covers, text paper upgrades, photos or illustrations in the text, and other formatting and design requirements. We're experimenting with color graphics in the text, but they can be prohibitively expensive. Manuscripts must be digital and properly formatted. You can check out how to submit your book for publication and do the formatting yourself to save time and money and get exactly the design and layout you want, or you can ask us to do the formatting for you.
Additional Services can help you design your cover, edit your book, register your copyright, and obtain your ISBN and corresponding bar code. For more on what we can and cannot do and the quality of our printing and binding, click on Frequently Asked Questions here or at left. An important point for authors: We're not a mass production operation. We fill a small self-publishing niche. We make books one at a time, and much of the process is by hand. We are proud of the books we make, but we don't want to raise expectations that we can do everything that the big commercial publishers, printers or design houses can do. Many authors use our books for family and friends, and as proofs or works-in-progress to show to agents, editors and publishers in hopes of landing a book deal with a commercial publishing house.
Besides printing your own book, we can print many classic books that are in the public domain. Would you like a copy of Tom Sawyer that is less expensive than the commercially-printed edition on the shelves? Would you like a copy of A Tale of Two Cities with your name on the cover? Are you a teacher or a member of a book club or a school superintendent who would like to save money by having us print copies of classic books for you or your students? Ask about the classics we can print.
